Our history
How did Space Shuttle come to be? Founder and still-active member Peter de Rijk remembers:
Going back to the nineteen-seventies, Space Shuttle simply did not exist yet — we were part of the Uithoorn tennis club, keeping fit through the winter months by playing badminton in the gym of the Alkwin Kollege on Wednesday nights. Towards the end of the seventies a few members wanted more than a casual rally, and led by Michel Helsloot, Theo Groot, Wil v.d. Genugten and Peter de Rijk it was decided to start playing at De Scheg from the summer of 1980. Two years later the club was formally established by notarial deed.
Our first trainer was Hugo Kimeney, who taught us the basics of the game. In 1982 we entered the post-season competition, and the juniors soon joined the youth league as well. The eighties were marked by huge interest in badminton — complete with a waiting list. The later arrival of members from the Alpha club helped secure the future of the association.
